Behind-the-Design: Modern Prairie Home
We interviewed DesignHOME Studios about a stunning Modern Prairie home they collaborated on with decorator, Fisher Grey, that has a blend of classic style with modern flair. This 7,400 square foot house has it all — four bedrooms, a cozy guest suite with a sauna, and a whole level dedicated to entertainment. Each floor has its own vibe and you’ll discover a mix of natural materials like wood, steel, and concrete. The designers even worked around height restrictions, adding unique rooflines that brought an extra sense of openness inside. Now, sit back and let’s explore this home together!
Q: Can you walk us through the home?
A: The house spans 7,400 square feet and includes 4 bedrooms and a guest suite. The lower entertainment level boasts 10-foot tall ceilings. Each floor is designed to serve a distinct function based on the owner’s needs.
The upper floor is a personal space for each family member, catering to work, sleep, and relaxation. The guest suite also features a sauna.
The first floor opens up to a terrace with a pool and includes a gym and office, in addition to the main living spaces.
The lower level is dedicated to entertainment, featuring a soccer room, billiards table, and theatre.
Q: What does a Modern Prairie home entail and how did you balance the traditional elements of Prairie architecture with modern design features?
A: Modern Prairie architecture integrates traditional elements such as elevation, floor plans, and interior design, with modern enhancements. This style uses natural, raw materials like structural steel, metals, and concrete in columns, hearths, and fireplaces. These materials are softened with natural wood in vaulted ceilings, stairs, floors, paneling, and built-ins.
A neutral modern palette, featuring blackened steel, white rift-sawn and reclaimed oak, and raw concrete, dynamically responds to changing daylight conditions, revealing diverse textures and tones. Furniture, art, and accessories are skillfully lit with architectural lighting, adding personalization, warmth, and beauty to this original home.
Q: Were there any specific local influences or elements that you incorporated into the design?
A: When designing a home, we prioritize creating curb appeal that complements neighboring houses and respects the surrounding architecture. This ensures the new home harmonizes with its environment and enhances the overall aesthetic of the neighborhood.
Q: Any challenges from the design process?
A: One major challenge we faced was navigating height regulations. To address this, we employed innovative combinations of flat roofs and adjusted roof pitches. This approach not only complied with regulations but also complemented the interior design, enhancing ceiling heights and overall spatial experience.
