From a Closet into a Powder Room
Every home has hidden potential, and sometimes, a simple reconfiguration can make a world of difference. We asked interior designer, Julie Corcoran of JC Renovators, to share how she transformed an underutilized walk-in closet into a beautiful and functional powder room.

Finding a hidden opportunity within a project is exactly what Julie did, “The client purchased this dated beach bungalow with the plan to turn it into a family vacation home and rental property,” the designer explains. “They wanted to accommodate 8-10 people, so the existing guest bath and primary bath were not quite sufficient. During space planning, I identified an opportunity to create a private oasis in the primary that could be used separately from the main house. There was also a large walk-in closet that wasn’t necessary for a vacation home. By reclaiming this space, we were able to enlarge the primary bath, add this little powder room, create an office, and kitchenette, and ass a built-in closet on the other side of the bedroom.”
Working within a compact 4’7” x 4’7” space required creative problem-solving. “The small custom vanity did not have space for soap, so we added a ledge detail to allow for soap and décor, with a storage shelf below for hand towels and extra TP,” she mentions. “We used a large subway tile in a herringbone pattern to bring some needed visual interest and to emphasize the height of the ceiling, creating a more spacious feel. Coupled with dramatic lighting and a pop of color, the chosen finishes add to the drama.”
Beyond the powder room, the redesign also enhanced the home’s overall functionality. “The client required a space they could use while renting out the rest of the home. In addition to the kitchenette and custom closet system, we created a private entrance and reconfigured the primary bathroom to allow for a fully private oasis,” Julie shares. “The primary bathroom had two entrances and led from the laundry room to the bathroom, and then into the closet before the bedroom. By reconfiguring the floor plan, we were able to enlarge the primary bath, add the powder bath, as well as much-needed storage in the laundry. The new configuration also greatly improved the flow of the space.”
For those considering similar transformations, Julie emphasizes the importance of seeking professional help, “…especially with small spaces,” she advises. “If storage, lighting, and a good flow through the home are accomplished, the space will feel larger and less cluttered. If the functionality is properly addressed, the ‘pretty’ part of design becomes seamless.”
This beach bungalow project is a testament to the power of intentional and thoughtful design, proving that with creativity and expertise, even the smallest spaces can make a big impact.
